Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to remove bags and wrinkles from under the eyes and to recover a youthful eye contour. This operation is performed as an outpatient procedure and takes about 1 to 2 hours. When considering an operation to rejuvenate their eyes, patients first inquire about the time needed for recovery and secondly, what to expect during that period.

Before entering the operating room, patients need to expect bruising and swelling after the procedure, without exceptions.  What varies with patients is how long these last. Each patient heals differently; some may experience swelling for 7 days and others for 2 weeks or more. The same applies to bruising. Most patients experience bruising for one week, but this may vary tremendously between patients. It is very important to follow the surgeon’s instruction before the operation, especially about avoiding or discontinuing certain medications and herbal supplements that may prolong bruising, such as aspirin and ginger.

After the operation, patients are urged to avoid exercise and lifting heavy objects. They are encouraged, however, to use cold compresses for the first 24 hours. Also, certain procedures such as lymphatic drainage massage and magnetotherapy may reduce swelling. Your surgeon will recommend the best postoperative therapy for you.
