More than 63,000 Canadians left Canada for medical care in 2016

According to a report recently published by the Fraser Institute, more than 63,000 Canadian left Canada for medical care in 2016.

That figure is 39% up on the figures in 2015.

British Columbia saw the highest percentage of Canadians traveling outside Canada for medical care at 2.4%. Ontario had the highest estimated number of patients traveling outside Canada for medical care at  26,513 in 2016.

The study contributes wait times as the main reason for patients seeking medical care outside Canada. The study reveals an average 10.6 weeks wait time from specialist to medically necessary treatment.

Some people are not prepared to wait that long or even to wait to see the specialist in the first place.
